How to Receive Deliverance?

Everyone faces battles in life. Sometimes we struggle with fear, addiction, anger, unforgiveness, oppression, temptation, or patterns that seem impossible to break.

But the good news of the Gospel is that Jesus Christ came to set people free.

Jesus said:

“Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”
— John 8:36 NKJV

Deliverance is not simply learning how to manage our problems. Deliverance is being set free through the power and authority of Jesus Christ.

Jesus did not come only to forgive our sins. He came to break the power of darkness and bring us into freedom.

1. Recognize That You Need Jesus

Before we can receive deliverance, we must recognize that we cannot save or free ourselves.

Romans 3:23 says:

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

Sin separates us from God and gives the enemy an opportunity to bring bondage into our lives.

But God has provided a way out through Jesus Christ.

Jesus said:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
— John 14:6 NKJV

Deliverance begins when we stop trusting in ourselves and turn to Jesus.

You don't have to fix yourself before you come to Jesus. Come to Jesus, and let Him begin His work in you.

2. Believe That Jesus Has Authority Over Darkness

Jesus demonstrated His authority over sickness, demons, sin, and every work of darkness.

Colossians 1:13 says:

“He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love.”

Notice the Bible says “He has delivered us.”

Deliverance is not something we accomplish through human strength. Jesus is the Deliverer.

When Jesus came into the world, He confronted the works of the enemy.

1 John 3:8 says:

“For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.”

The power of darkness is real, but the authority of Jesus Christ is greater.

3. Repent and Turn to God

Deliverance requires us to turn away from sin and turn toward God.

Acts 3:19 says:

“Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.”

Repentance means changing direction.

It means saying:

“Jesus, I don't want to continue living under the control of sin. I surrender my life to You.”

We cannot hold onto what is destroying us while asking God to set us free from it.

Sometimes deliverance begins with a simple decision:

“Lord, I surrender.”

4. Receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior

The greatest deliverance is salvation.

Jesus said:

“Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
— John 3:3 NKJV

Romans 10:9 says:

“That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Salvation means that we are no longer slaves to sin and darkness. We belong to Christ.

When you receive Jesus, you receive forgiveness, a new identity, and a new life.

You don't have to remain the person you used to be.

2 Corinthians 5:17 says:

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”

5. Renounce What Has Held You in Bondage

As we surrender to Christ, we must also turn away from things that have opened doors to bondage.

James 4:7 says:

“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”

Notice the order:

Submit to God.
Resist the devil.

Our authority begins with submission to God.

We should not place our trust in occult practices, witchcraft, fortune-telling, false spiritual practices, or anything that competes with our relationship with God.

Instead, we turn completely toward Jesus.

We can say:

“Jesus, I belong to You. I reject everything that is contrary to Your Word. I surrender every area of my life to You.”

6. Forgive Others and Release Offenses

Sometimes people carry deep wounds because of what others have done to them.

Jesus teaches us to forgive.

Ephesians 4:31–32 says:

“Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.”

Forgiveness does not mean saying that what happened was acceptable.

It means releasing the person and the offense into God's hands instead of allowing bitterness to control your heart.

Jesus wants to heal your heart as well as free your life.

7. Fill Your Life With God's Word and the Holy Spirit

Deliverance is not only about getting something out of your life. It is also about filling your life with God.

Jesus said:

“If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
— John 8:31–32 NKJV

The Word of God renews our minds and teaches us how to live in freedom.

Romans 12:2 says:

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Spend time in the Word.

Pray.

Worship Jesus.

Stay connected to God's people.

Listen to the Holy Spirit.

Freedom must become a way of life.

8. Stand in the Freedom Christ Has Given You

Galatians 5:1 says:

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.”

The enemy wants you to return to the same chains Jesus broke.

But you don't have to go back.

When temptation comes, stand on God's Word.

When fear comes, trust Jesus.

When condemnation comes, remember what Christ has done.

When the enemy tells you that you will never change, remember:

“Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”

Your freedom is found in Jesus.

Conclusion:

Deliverance begins with Jesus.

You don't have to remain bound by your past.

You don't have to remain controlled by fear.

You don't have to remain trapped in sin.

You don't have to fight the battle in your own strength.

Jesus Christ is the Deliverer.

He came to save you, forgive you, restore you, and set you free.

Colossians 2:15 says that Jesus:

“Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.”

The victory belongs to Jesus.

So today, make a decision:

Turn to Jesus.
Repent of your sins.
Receive Him as Lord and Savior.
Surrender your life to Him.
Reject the works of darkness.
Stand on God's Word.
And walk in the freedom Christ has given you.
